Continental Divide Trail – Day 37 & 38

June 7-8, 2023
Miles Today/ Total: 0.0 / 700.4

I’m taking 2 zero days in Chama for a couple of reasons: 1) my sleeping pad has a leak that I repaired, but still leaks out enough that I have to reinflate a couple of times a night. Going into a high snow area I want to make sure I have a good sleeping pad to insulate me from the ground if I have to camp on snow. I ordered a new pad from Amazon and it’s to be delivered Thursday 6/8. 2) a few extra days to allow snow to melt in the higher elevations can only help make the hike easier.

I woke up Wednesday and got breakfast at the Box Car Cafe again. I spent some time there posting my blog updates. I then headed back to the motel and packed up for my move to Cumbres Suites on the other side of town. I stopped by Family Dollar on my way to the new motel and picked up a few items for my food resupply and a pair of flip-flops for camp shoes.

I was able to check into Cumbres Suites early and headed to the grocery store to finish my resupply. Back at the motel I repackaged my food and spent the rest of the day watching TV and catching up on social media.

It seems Wednesday is not a good day for restaurants on the south side of Chama as everything was closed. I went to the grocery store and picked up a couple of frozen dinners and warmed them in the microwave at the motel.

Thursday was more of the same laid back activity catching up on social media and watching TV. Outlaw BBQ was open on Thursday so I went there for some good BBQ and visited with some of the other hikers still in town – Sticks, Die Hard, Slytherin and a few others.

Back at the motel, more TV and got to bed early for a (fairly) early start tomorrow.
