Te Araroa Trail – Day 24
Wednesday, November 22, 2023
Distance/ Total: 26.9 km / 16.7 mi
It rained through the night and everything was wet this morning. I packed up and was on the trail by 7:00am.
The track today started as a roadwalk, but soon the road was just a 4WD track with a single trail through it. It was a pretty good climb to start the morning and after reaching the peak dropped back down into a valley.
It rejoined a road and became a roadwalk for a few more kilometers before once again becoming single track. This trail was a little muddy, but nothing like we had seen the last couple of days. This section had several ups and downs before joining back to a gravel road.
I stopped on the side of the road and ate lunch before continuing on. The trail turned off the gravel road once again and climbed on single track over a hill and into a farm pasture. It eventually descended to a road once again and I stopped at a DOC campsite to refill my water. I was getting pretty dry and drank over a liter before heading down the trail again.
It was a short roadwalk to Puhoi Tearoom and I arrived about 3:00pm. I set up my tent, showered and cleaned the mud off my gear. 2 other hikers and I headed to the pub to grab a beer. About 30 minutes later 2 other hikers joined us and we enjoyed each others company over dinner.
